Scholarships to Study in the US (PART TWO)


In continuation of our previously published article on scholarships to study in the US, the scholarships were divided into three categories: University-specific scholarships, Scholarships by Non-Governmental organisations and Government-funded scholarships. The university-specific scholarships have been discussed in the first part of this write-up. In conclusion, we’d be highlighting the government and Non-Government specific scholarships.

Government-funded Scholarships

  • Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program

    The Humphrey Program brings young and mid-career professionals from designated countries to the United States for a year of non-degree graduate-level study, leadership development, and professional collaboration with U.S. counterparts.

    Eligibility: Candidates must have had an undergraduate degree with five years of full-time professional experience. Formore eligibility criteria, follow the link above.

    Worth: The fellowship usually covers the payment of tuition and fees, monthly stipends, Health insurance, air travels etc.

    Application deadlines vary by country. The nominating U.S. Embassy or Binational Fulbright Commission will advise you of its internal deadline for receiving applications.

  • Fulbright Foreign Student Program

    It enables graduate students, young professionals and artists, from abroad to study and conduct research in the United States.

    The scholarships are for study towards a Master’s or PhD degree, and can also be awarded for non-degree postgraduate studies. Study and research under this program is for one or more years at U.S. universities or other appropriate institutions

    Eligibility: Available to international students in all subjects with the exception of medicine.

    Worth: The scholarship covres the tuition fee, monthly stipend, health insurance etc.

    The deadlines vary by countries.

    Non- Government Specific Scholarship

    Students from Developing Countries

  • MasterCard Foundation Scholarships – This is available to African students to study in the US and Africa
  • Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme: This is for postgraduate international students from countries in Africa.

    International Students

  • Abbey Road Summer Scholarship: This available to international students. Scholarships worth $1000 are awarded to art and language students. There is also $500 fellowship for summer enrichment programmes for universities within the US.
  • Civil Society Leadership Awards: It is a full scholarship. It is available for students from eligible countries
  • The Next Gen Scholarship Fund: It is available for non-residents and international students. The qualifying GPA is at least 3.0 and candidates must be enrolled at an accredited university within washington DC, Maryland or Virginia.
  • Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarship – Awarded twice a year to passionate international students wishing to study in the US. Worth US$1,000.
  • David P. Shapiro Autism Scholarship – It is a one-time scholarship worth US$1,000 open to current or prospective students in the US diagnosed with autism.

    Graduate Students

  • Rotary Peace Fellowships: It is awarded to master’s degree students who wish to study at one of the Rotary Peace Centres in the US.

    Asian Students

  • Japan-United States Friendship Commission – It is a joint initiative between the US and Japan.It offers grants to Japanese students who wish to study in the US and vice versa.
  • East-West Center Scholarships and Fellowships – It is targeted at students from the Asia-Pacific region to study in selected Universities in the US.
  • Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program – Usually awarded to 11 exceptional Asian students to study in the US at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. It covers the full tuition and student fees.

    Female students

    Bat and Ball Game Women’s Sports Scholarship – It is offered to a woman currently studying a sports-related degree at any US university.

    MIT-Zaragoza Women in Logistics and SCM Scholarship – It is available for female students to study at Zaragoza Logistics Center at MIT regardless of age, ethnicity or nationalityUS scholarships for female students of any age, ethnicity or nationality, to study at the .

    AAUW International Fellowships – It is offered by the American Association of University Women for female international students to study in the US.
