5 Scholarships to Study in Belgium for International Students


    The questions that should naturally occur to mind is WHY ARE YOU NOT CONSIDERING STUDYING IN BELGIUM?.       We present here 5 common scholarships for international students to study in Belgium. Some of these scholarships are currently open for application and some are closed.       Scholarships are awarded to applicants from 31 eligible countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to attend one of the selected trainings or master’s programmes taught in English at a Flemish university or university college. The Scholarships are awarded as International Course Programmes(ICP) and International Training Programmes(ITP).
      International Training Programmes (ITP) are short to medium-term, intensive, interactive, and practical trainings organised at a university or university college in Belgium/Flanders.
      Eligibility Criteria for ICP:
    • Nationality and country of residence: A candidate should be both a national and a resident of one of the 31 eligible countries (not necessarily the same country) at the time of the application.
    • Relevant professional experience and a support letter: Priority is given to candidates who are employed in academic institutions, research institutes, governments, the social economy or NGOs, or to those who aim to have a career in one of these sectors. The training candidate should have relevant professional experience and a support letter confirming (re)integration in a professional context where the acquired knowledge and skills will be immediately applicable.
    • Fungibility with other VLIR-UOS funding: Candidates who are working at a university where we already fund IUC, TEAM or SI projects, can receive an ITP-ICP scholarship if they clearly motivate the reason for their application and if they clarify why the participation at the ICP or ITP programme cannot be funded as part of the IUC, TEAM or SI programme or project funds that already exist.
    • Other VLIR-UOS scholarship applications and previously awarded scholarships: A potential candidate can only submit one scholarship application with us per year – irrespective of the scholarship type – and can, therefore, only be selected for one VLIR-UOS scholarship every year.
    • Candidates who already received one of our scholarships to participate in another ITP, will not be eligible. Candidates who already received one of our scholarship to participate in an ICP (or vice versa) can only be selected if the previously attended course is thematically linked to the ITP.
      It is usually a fully-funded scholarships that includes the tuition fee, living allowance, medical insurance and monthly stipend both for ICP and ITP.
      It can vary but it is usually in November of every year for ITP and March for ICP. Applications are currently open for ITP. The call for applications for ICP is March 1, 2019.
      It provides Top-up Grants to candidates from all countries on the OESO-DAC list, who wish to obtain a master’s degree at Ghent University.
      There’s no open call for these grants, they are now incorporated in the normal application scheme to obtain admission. Only academically admitted students will be considered. The Scholarship is for two-master years.
      Applications for admission should be submitted before March 1 of every admission year.
      Qualified students will pay the tuition fee of EEA students. Qualified students are entitled to monthly allowance of €654 and All-in insurance (health, civil liability, repatriation).
    • New students who wish to obtain a Master’s or Master-after-Master’s degree at Ghent University.
    • You have to have a bachelor degree when applying for a Master programme.
    • You have to have a Master degree when applying for a Master-after-Master programme.
    • You have to come from a country on the long-list of the OESO-DAC country list.
      KU Leuven is situated at about twenty kilometers from Brussels, the capital of both Belgium and Europe. It is the oldest university of the Low Countries. As such, it has a long-standing tradition of hospitality towards students and scholars from abroad.
      As one of its contributions to development cooperation, every academic year, KU Leuven selects exceptional students from developing countries as scholarship candidates to obtain their PhD from the largest university of Belgium. The programme is managed by IRO, the University’s Interfaculty Council for Development Cooperation. The aim is to give students the opportunity to do their full PhD research at KU Leuven.
      The deadline is usually January 31 of every year.
      Eligibility Criteria
    • The applicant must be a citizen of one of the countries on the OECD table that are considered as: Least Developed Countries, Low Income Countries or Low Middle Income Countries.
    • The applicant may not possess a citizenship from an EU country. The applicant may not posses a long-term EU residence permit.
    • The candidate’s latest master’s degree must have been awarded no more than ten years prior to October 1st, 2018 (including the ongoing calendar year).
    • The candidate must hold an academic qualification at least equivalent to a high distinction. Degrees obtained with a final score equivalent to second class second/lower division will not be taken into consideration.
    • The research project must have excellent academic quality, with a special focus on the development relevance of the proposal.
    • The vacancies that are published on the KU Leuven website are already funded and thus, cannot participate for this scholarship.
    • The candidate must demonstrate a development-oriented motivation.
    • The candidate must be supported by a KU Leuven promoter.
      The candidate must be supported by a local co-promoter at the candidate’s home country or where most of the research will be carried out and which must be one of the countries on the OECD table that are considered as: Least Developed Countries, Low Income Countries or Low Middle Income Countries.
    • The candidate must be supported by excellent recommendations from relevant referees.
      It includes full tuition fees, monthly stipend of € 1,514 (75% of the net salary of an assistant), housing allowance, social security, installation allowance.
      These Scholarships are for masters and training courses. They offer international students from developing countries the chance to pursue a one-year specialised master’s degree programme or a 4-to-6-month advanced training course within a higher education institution of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Belgium.
      Scholarships are currently open for application, Deadlines are January 11 and February 8, 2019
      Applicants must:
    • Be a citizen of a developing country. To be eligible, applicants must be residing and working in their country of origin when they apply;
    • Only nationals of the following countries may apply for grants from ARES: Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Ecuador, Ethiopia (only for training courses in English), Haiti, Madagascar, Morocco, Niger, Peru, the Philippines, the DR Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, and Vietnam;
    • Be under the age of 40 for degree programs, and under 45 for training courses, at the time the training is scheduled to begin;
      Have earned a diploma comparable to a graduate-level diploma from Belgian university studies. Nevertheless, for certain training courses, different requirements may be requested, which will be specified below;
    • Possess relevant professional experience in a developing country of at least two years after graduate studies, or of three years after their studies if the applicant has earned a post-grad degree from a university in an industrialized country;
    • Have good mastery of written and spoken French. For training courses held in another language, it is essential to have a proper level in the course’s language, both written and spoken. We shall insist that the applicant commit to learning French in order to take part in daily life in Belgium;
    • Apply for only one training course.
      Motivated and talented international students interested in participating in an international master programme of the Faculty of Science of the KU Leuven are invited to apply for a scholarship. Due to specifically assigned scholarships, you can only apply for a limited number of Masters.
      These scholarships are currently open till February 15, 2019.
      Eligibility Criteria
      Applicants must meet and prove the following requirements:
    • the applicants have not studied or worked at the University of Leuven before,
    • the applicants have a bachelor degree from a foreign university that gives them access to the master programme they are applying for,
    • the applicants have not yet acquired a master degree or a PhD,
    • the applicants can prove excellent study results during their former training,
      the applicants can prove a very strong knowledge of English,
    • the applicants show strong motivation to follow a master programme at the Faculty of Science of the KU Leuven
    • the applicants are willing to act as ambassador for the programme.
      The scholarship will always cover the tuition fee for 1 year, the insurance and a basic health insurance coverage. The amount awarded for living expenses can vary.
